Mission Statement:

The mission of Open Gates Equine Rescue, Inc. ("Open Gates") is to protect, rescue and rehabilitate equine (horse, pony, mule, donkey or hinny). Our primary focus area is the State of Maine.

Our Goals:

Provide shelter, quality care and treatment, rehabilitation, foster care and adoption for abused, neglected and unwanted horses.
Forge cooperative partnerships both locally and nationally to ensure the protection of horses.
Establish and provide programs and volunteer opportunities that help to develop compassion and responsibility for horses.
Provide an environment that teaches patience, kindness, and creates a sense of moral and social wellbeing
To involve the community in events and activities that heightens the awareness of the abuse and neglect of equines and the link between animal abuse and future atrocities committed against people.
Continued commitment to maintain ethical business practices and being good stewards of donated funds.
Increase contributions to ensure continued growth.
To create and nurture a mutually beneficial relationship between abused and neglected horses and caring human beings.

What We Do

Open Gates Equine Rescue acquires abused and neglected horses by donation, State confiscation, or by purchase. Open Gates Equine Rescue, Inc. is licensed by the Animal Welfare Program of the State of Maine based on the Animal Welfare Program's veterinarian inspection of its facilities.

Once in Open Gates' care, we make every effort to bring the equine back to good health. We insure proper nutrition, medical care, and farrier services such as hoof trims and corrective shoeing. At present, all of the activities of Open Gates is conducted by volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. They work with us and our trainer to learn how to handle and gain the trust of the individual horses. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer at Open Gates.

Open your hearts to the horses,
Many are hungry and hurt.

How can they dream when they want to scream.

For the pain they feel in their hearts.

Where is the shelter and warm bed.

I wonder why I'm not well fed.

Will you be the one to help me.

This journey of abuse to end.

All they want is love.

To know that you care and love

To guide them as He would above.

Am I just dreaming oh what do I see.

People are smiling and walking toward me.

They smile so sweetly and now I can tell,

I will be rescued from my awful hell.

Now I'll have shelter and a warm bed.

Now I will be well fed.

You've opened your hearts to the horses.
